Aurora

Tondo, Manille

Aurora came about as the result of a walk we took around the neighborhood of Vitas-Tondo. We were hoping to meet some of the people who lived there, and understand how they lived and what their needs were. A chance meeting with Princess during this walk determined the next steps for LP4Y. Princess was 17, with 2 young children and a baby, and had not received any schooling for many years. She was unmarried and had no regular work. She admitted that being pregnant was a way to avoid being forced into prostitution.

The Aurora Program is aimed at young mothers facing extreme poverty and exclusion. It was launched in October 2011 in Vitas-Tondo, in Manila. This is the area near the port with the greatest concentration of people living below the extreme poverty threshold.

Within the framework of “Professional Training for Entrepreneurs” the young mothers spend roughly half the week making handicraft items. In the run-up to Christmas they made stars from recycled paper, and are now working on soft toys. The remainder of the week is taken up with general training: English, computer skills, oral expression, and not least to helping them develop their life project.

The program has accepted the challenge of keeping the children close to their mothers. Every morning lots are drawn to decide which mother will watch the children while the others continue their training.

“Thanks to LP4Y I’m beginning to rebuild my family. I have regained my parents’ confidence. Even when I don’t want to get up I do because I want to make a success out of my life.”
