Old Balara, Quezon City, Manila

Old Balara is in Quezon, which has the highest concentration of slum dwellings in metropolitan Manila. Old Balara is one such slum, home to thousands of families (15k households according to the last census). Some manage to build a solid home of breezeblocks, while others barely survive, suffering from tuberculosis or domestic violence. For Out-of-School Youth there is no hope of decent work, just odd jobs with no security, sometimes unpaid … in an attempt to survive.

To start with we met Father Daniel, a member of the Fils de la Charité association. He’s been active here for nearly 10 years, implementing dozens of community projects in his parish with great skill and sensitivity. He confirmed our estimate of the high number of Out-of-School Youth and in November 2010 offered to house a Life Project Center in his parish premises above the church.

With the support of the local community the Young adults of the LPC have developed a business around the production and commercialization of herbal products made from medicinal plants: soaps, creams and syrups available in a variety of perfumes. The activity has been developed with the Young adults within the framework of “Professional Training for Entrepreneurs” (PTE).

The activity takes up nearly half the week and provides exposure to the various elements of a business, giving the Young adults a chance to put their skills to the test.

“I hope other young people will get the chance to work with LP4Y. Thank you to those more fortunate than us who take time to help”
